Whatman products are used in protocols used for measuring hazardous contaminants such as heavy metals from land fills. For instance in the US EPA's Method 1311 for estimating Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), Whatman TCLP papers can be used. These papers are acid treated and have low metal contents.

After the digestion procedure, the samples can be filter using Whatman TCLP paper. Organic contaminants can be extracted using solvent extraction procedures using Whatman thimbles. Whatman SPE extraction devices and TLC plates can also be used in these applications.
